New Markets Researcher (contract)
Background / motivation
Empact Technologies seeks to contract with a researcher to investigate opportunities in new markets. The expectation is that the researcher will work with Empact’s VP Strategy & Partnerships over the course of 6-8 weeks; final deliverables will include a written report and a presentation to Empact leadership. There is a possibility of transitioning this role into permanent, full-time employment, but candidates should not expect this up-front.
Empact is an experienced provider of labor compliance management, overseeing millions of wage-hours on the construction of clean energy projects. With Empact, the projects’ owners can prove that the projects meet the Prevailing Wage and Apprenticeship (PWA) requirements to qualify for tax credits. Empact offers both Turnkey service (direct oversight and accountability for compliance) and a DIY platform to streamline the work of external compliance management teams.
About The Role:
Key deliverables will cover the following (with supporting data and documentation, including customer / stakeholder interviews)
- Validation / refutation of Empact’s positioning and value proposition
- Product Requirements Document
- Go-to-market plan
- Customer & buyer mapping framework
- Messaging + proof points
- Framework for estimating cost of customer acquisition
- Framework for customer prioritization / sales funnel management
- Channels / partnerships
- Resourcing / hiring
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in construction project management, ideally directly overseeing labor compliance; understanding of market drivers (e.g., how customer requirements and competitive landscape have changed in the last ten years)
- Able to leverage personal connections with senior decision-makers at engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) firms and others to secure interviews and solicit feedback and insight
- Experience working with (ideally selling) both service offerings and software-as-a-service; understanding of the sales and marketing dynamics (e.g., customer stickiness, switching costs)
- Understanding of the ‘construction tech’ products / offerings and business models, as well as drivers of historical success and failure
- Able to operate independently in a hypothesis-driven manner, proactively bringing issues to, and raising questions with, the VP Strategy & Partnerships
- Experience conducting market research (including customer interviews) and synthesizing such deliverables as those listed above in a concise, compelling, and actionable manner
